Kids Helping Kids: Youngsters Set Up Roadside Hot Cocoa Stand for Wheeling SleepOut

WHEELING — The Crews siblings — Cooper, 7, Harper, 6 and Foster, 3 — wanted a fun way to raise money for their Wheeling SleepOut team. What’s more fun than hot cocoa topped with chocolate chips and mini marshmallows?So the kids set up a hot cocoa stand Saturday morning outside the Touch of Amish store on National Road in Wheeling. With the help of mother Terra Crews and father Micah Crews, they served passersby and supporters who stopped to enjoy a hot drink on a chilly morning. A few of their friends also came to help.
They raised $135 for the SleepOut, which is a fundraiser for the Youth Services System Transitional Living Program for youth aging out of foster care and/or facing homelessness.
Harper said, “It was really sweet for People to come and give us money for the Wheeling SleepOut.”
Cooper added, “I like helping people. I also want to win a trophy.”
“This is such a fun and important experience for our children. They are serving their community and spreading kindness. We are so proud of them,” said Terra Crews, who is the special events coordinator at YSS.
The 9th annual Wheeling SleepOut will be Nov. 8 at the Miracle League Field at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex. Teams and individuals raise awareness about youth homelessness while competing for fundraising prizes and creating boxes to sleep in overnight at the field.
